Fireflies Going Dark

Truemors :: Fireflies Going Dark
A shortage of funds and the brief lifespan of the insects (1-3 weeks) makes getting official numbers a challenge, but most scientists hypothesize that the increase in artificial lighting at night is interfering with the mating light show that brightens so many of our childhood memories. Acknowledging the fact that fireflies aren’t necessarily top priority on the species endangerment list, some say they could be the ecosystem’s “canary in the coal mine,” and it’s awfully quiet in that cage.

My son has seen fireflies, but maybe his children will not?

John Cage Memograms

U B U W E B

Here are some great examples of correspondence from intrepid communicator John Cage. He made it a point to keep his address and phone number listed in the New York City phone book and did his best to engage with anyone who wanted to talk to him. I was fortunate enough to see him take bows at a performance of a prepared piano due in NYC when I was a teenager. Philip Glass played on the same stage a little later that day, an organ duo. I miss New York!

"It is of the greatest urgency--even an ethical matter--that we be able to reach one another." -- John Cage

Duh?

News 8 Austin | 24 Hour Local News | TOP STORIES | Bush expected to sign toy safety law: "The bill bans lead from children's toys and imposes the toughest lead standards for such products in the world. Lead paint was a major factor in the recall of 45 million toys and children's items last year. Many of those were from China."

It's getting so you can't poison anything any more.

Bon Iver

I've been enjoying Bon Iver's music very much, having stumbled across it in the last week or so.
